How the daily budget works

  1. Start with your money for the period: salary, benefits or any income until the next payday.
  2. Take out bills and fixed costs: rent, utilities, phone, loan payments, subscriptions.
  3. Pay yourself first: set aside savings before you spend.
  4. Divide the rest by the days left. That's your daily budget. Tomorrow, recalculate with what's left.

The daily view works because it's a number you can act on at the checkout. A monthly budget of 700 says little on day 12; "you have 23 left today" does.

Questions

How do I calculate a daily budget?

Take the money you have for the period, subtract bills, fixed costs and what you want to save, subtract what you've already spent, then divide by the number of days left until your next payday (today included).

What if I overspend one day?

Recalculate tomorrow: what's left is spread over fewer days, so your daily amount drops a little. Spend less than the allowance and it rises. The Daily Budget app does this for you every day.

Should savings come out before or after the daily budget?

Before. Set savings aside first, like a bill, so the daily number is money you can actually spend.

Does this calculator store my numbers?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
