Newborn puppy weight gain calculator
Enter the birth weight, the puppy’s age and today’s weight. The calculator shows the gain since birth, the average daily gain and the day-10 target, and flags the two warning signs breeders watch for. It uses the same checks as the Sire & Dam app.

What normal weight gain looks like
- A small dip in the first 24–48 hours is normal, while the puppy learns to feed.
- After that, the weight should go up every day.
- Most puppies double their birth weight by about day 10. Doubling in 10 days works out at roughly 7% a day, compounded.
Target weight at day 10
| Birth weight | Target by day 10 |
|---|---|
| 100 g (3.5 oz) | 200 g (7.1 oz) |
| 150 g (5.3 oz) | 300 g (10.6 oz) |
| 200 g (7.1 oz) | 400 g (14.1 oz) |
| 300 g (10.6 oz) | 600 g (21.2 oz) |
| 400 g (14.1 oz) | 800 g (28.2 oz) |
| 500 g (17.6 oz) | 1000 g (35.3 oz) |
| 600 g (21.2 oz) | 1200 g (42.3 oz) |
How to weigh newborn puppies
- Use a digital kitchen scale that shows single grams; ounces are too coarse for tiny puppies.
- Weigh every day for the first two weeks, at the same times (for example morning and evening), and write it down.
- Use a collar colour or mark to tell the puppies apart, so each weight goes with the right puppy.
- Compare day to day, not feed to feed: a puppy that has just fed weighs more than one about to feed.
When to call the vet
A puppy that loses weight after the first two days, stops gaining, hasn't doubled its birth weight by day 10, seems weak, cries constantly or isn't feeding needs a vet check. Newborns can go downhill fast, so don't wait.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight should a newborn puppy gain per day?
Enough to double the birth weight in about 10 days, which is roughly 7% of its weight a day on average. A small loss in the first 24–48 hours is normal; after that the weight should go up every day.
My puppy lost a few grams on day 1. Should I worry?
A small dip in the first one to two days is common. A loss after day 2, or a puppy that keeps losing, needs a closer look by your vet.
How often should I weigh newborn puppies?
Daily for the first two weeks, at the same times each day, then every few days until weaning. The Sire & Dam app lets you weigh the whole litter in one go.
